(More customer reviews)I race in 24 Hours of LeMons races; my team has done about ten races so far. For the last race, my team decided to built out a "new" car, a 1968 Datsun. Since the 1968 fuel tank didn't look so safe for racing, we got this fuel cell for it. We installed it carefully, following the enclosed instructions.
We did several rounds of test laps (at Sears Point/Infineon) and it seemed fine. But after a couple of hours of racing, when we were coming into the pits, the race judges stopped us because the car smelled like gasoline. Turns out there was a film of gas on top of the fuel cell. Upon further inspection, we found that the gasket inside the fill cap absorbs gasoline and expands, preventing it from properly sealing the fuel cell. We miraculously found someone else at the track who had a brand-new sealed Jaz replacement gasket. We replaced the previous gasket with the new one.
We then got pulled over again when coming off the track because the car smelled of gasoline; the new gasket had the same problem as the first. We couldn't be sure, but it also appeared to be fuel coming out of one of the gaskets around the filler neck. According to the (reasonable) race rules, we were kicked out for having a fuel leak that wasn't fixed on the first try. We missed out on half the race after putting hours of work into preparing the car, hauling it and all our gear to the track, not to mention $1250 in race entry fees, because of this leaky fuel cell.
I wrote to Jaz, complaining about this. I got one response from someone there saying that fuel additives tend to cause their gaskets to stretch and swell (we were using Chevron 87, the sort of thing you'd think a fuel cell designer would expect). He said "those in charge" would look into it and get back to us the following week. Two weeks later, not having heard anything, I wrote a follow up email. As I write this review, it's now been another two weeks; almost a month since my original email, and I haven't gotten a real response.
Awful engineering, awful customer service. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
