Consider this: first impressions cannot be erased. With that said read on about my 1st and last impression of Borla products.
Take a very close look at the pictured product. You know what they always say... it looked great from 20 feet away! As a long time car guy, I know a quality exhaust system... and this one ranks low on my list. Borla has taken CHEAP to an all new low. Start with the mufflers. Note how they "appear" to shine. Some of the product guides I read stated that the mufflers were "polished" SS. What a joke. Sure, the metal is shiny, but I've purchased enough TRUE Polished SS Systems to know the diff. More than just a few, in fact... several Vettes, one or two Stangs and a number of pieces (from MagnaFlow and FlowMaster) for several AMC classic cars. Check out any local car parts store and they'll show you true polished mufflers... they almost look like they're chromed. Not so here. There are many grades of SS and different qualities of "polish". The material "may" be stainless, but the polish/finish. Ever get a cheap, $5 haircut and then walk out the door and notice a sign across the street saying "WE FIX $5 HAIR CUTS"! Like the cheap haircut, this system is near bottom of the barrel.
And then there's the CHEAPLY IMPLEMENTED PIPE BENDS. Looks like Borla contracted them out to Midas! These babies are definitely NOT mandrel bent, which is the true measure of a quality system. Another black eye for Borla.
What I will say is that the reason I made this purchase was because a friend's car has this system on his car (same as mine) and I liked the exhaust tone. His car had one of the aftermarket ground effects kits on it, so it was near impossible to see the exhaust quality. All I could see was the POLISHED MUFFLER TIPS. So the sound isn't bad... the system just looks like hell and it's been poorly implemented (pipe bends).
I won't be purchasing any more Borla systems for my cars in the future. I'll stick to B&B, FlowMaster, MagnaFlow and the likes of others that are truely polished SS. And I'll be making absolutely certain that I get a good pre-purchase look at the system quality. Lesson learned.
So, to recap... there may be "some" enthusiasts out there who are happy w/a system like this because they either don't care what it looks like or don't have an Engineering Degree (like I do... I've also done a stint in a Quality Engineering Manufacturing Division) and have experienced true quality. Or maybe they just don't know what a difference a mandrel bent pipe can make to the flow characteristics of a true performance exhaust? Don't know and don't care. So, buyer beware!
