(More customer reviews)This little generator is a good deal but may require some initial tweaking to compensate for its Chinese "quality control". It is available from a bevy of suppliers for much less than the $159 I paid. However, living in beautiful NorCal, I need everything CA Air Resources Board (CARB)- approved, which limits my choices.
The product arrived well-packaged, complete, and in good shape. Fueled with the specified 1:40 two-stroke mix, it started up readily. After releasing the choke, the engine ran uneven, surging up and down as if low on fuel. Checking showed fuel flow into the carburetor was not the problem. It turns out that a screw was missing from the carburetor that normally would have plugged a hole, so the carburetor was sucking excess air. After finding and tightening a fitting replacement, the surging was gone and the engine ran smoothly. Having warmed up for ten minutes, a test of the output voltage showed 108V to 112V. The governor easily adjusted with a screwdriver so that the output went up to the desired 119-124V. For the next 4 1/2 hours, the generator ran steady under a 250W load, as recommended for break-in. Periodic checks of the voltage were stable around +/- 120V. As a final test, I hooked up a 500W halogen worklight and a 350W electric drill. Both were powered without any problems.
I look forward to using the unit to replenish my camper's battery when dry-camping for more than three nights. Since it is a little on the noisy side, I bought a 50ft extension cord to get some distance between me and the generator when it is running. Beats paying a grand for a Honda or a Yamaha.
