(More customer reviews)First off, it's really 2800-3000 watts continuous. Jaingdong model JD3000. It uses a Jaingdong JF200 6.5 hp motor which is an excellent clone of the Honda OHV engine (licensed from Honda). It is smooth, quiet, and best of all pretty fuel efficient for a gasoline powered generator. The generator is brushless and therefore really has nothing to wear out other than bearings.
That's the good stuff...
Unfortunately, the Chinese pedigree does show in a few places. The fuel gauge never worked on mine. The electrical components (circuit breaker, meter, etc) seem kind of crude, but have held up OK in use so far.
I've owned this generator for almost two years now and it probably has about 40 hours of runtime. It had no trouble keeping us going during several power outages, the longest of which was about 30 hours. It ran an oil furnace, refrigerator, TV/DVD Player, and a few lights with no problem. The output voltage and frequency does not sag under load. I feel it is sized just about right for the load we place on it. A bigger generator would simply use more fuel.
One tip that makes the generator much easier to start. Always turn off the fuel petcock and remove the drain plug from the carburetor to drain out the old fuel. Replace plug and turn fuel petcock back on. Wait 30 seconds, flip on the choke, and it will start easily, even when it's quite cold outside. Fresh gas does help a lot too.
Overall, I think this is the best emergency generator value on the market. I paid $299 from Homier, and thought that was an outstanding price. I see they have it on sale for $219 right now. It's an outright steal for that price!
No matter what brand of generator you buy, if you have it shipped via UPS, or whatever, there is a chance it will have been handled very poorly. Shipping companies folks don't like handling heavy boxes and they tend to slam them around, roll them off the end of loading docks, etc. The bottom of the support frame was bent on mine, but was easily straightened. I would suggest planning to be at home when the generator is delivered, and if at all possible open the box before the driver leaves to document any possible damage.

We have an all electric home. Of course it won't handle a 20kw furnace or Central A/C, but runs a whole house fans and small fans for the wood stove. Electric start and fuel economy make this unit great for the price.

One year after owning this generator it only had 10 hours service and we needed it to keep us going after a major storm took out our power. 10 hours into service, the rocker arm bolts broke and the engine shut down. The engine is made in China and the company has been contacted many many times for repair parts. I was willing to pay for the parts but they have not provided any opportunity to get them. I have been trying for 4 months and have not been contacted to order the needed parts. The quality of workmanship is terrible! The customer service is non-existant.

I even tried to contact the engine manufacturer in China, but they have little or no presence in the US. Guess I'm just out of ruck!

(More customer reviews)I purchased a DS7200Q (DuroStar) generator from Maxtool (the trademark holder) in January 2010. By mid-Feburary I was having to order replacement parts. By April, I found metal and paper in the oil crank case. I took photos of the metal fragments and paper and sent them to MaxTool. They suggested I have the generator evaluated by a diesel repair shop. The repair shop found the connector rod was sheared. Clearly a defective machine, but MaxTool refuses to replace the engine or refund me. All of this happened before the generator even logged 50 hrs. Now I have a $1000 diesel generator that is useless, plus the cost of the "evaluation". They do not have any concern for customer service, nor do they stand behind their products.

(More customer reviews)I have had this for about a month. This is a very high quality unit, nicely designed. I chose it over the Honda Eu2000i because it has a fuel gage and is a hair lighter (2 pounds), and liked the styling better. Specs are so close it's a tie... the Yamaha unit specs a bit quieter in "eco" throttle but the Honda specs a bit quieter at full power. Prior to this purchase I had bought a Honeywell inverter generator (a much less expensive Chinese-made knock-off) from Costco which I returned, because I was unimpressed with the Honeywell unit's quality and noise level. While the price difference is major, you get what you pay for in this case. Anyone looking at the cheaper knock-offs should really consider that a 5db increase in noise level is about twice as loud, the way humans perceive it.
The most impressive thing about this unit is how quiet it is. Even at full engine speed you can stand about 6 feet away and have a normal conversation without raising your voice, or talk on a cell phone without undue distraction. It features an "eco" setting which tapers down the engine throttle and noise when full load isn't required. At half-throttle or less, from about 6 feet away it is about half as loud and amazingly quiet. I used it to run a 50-amp 12v battery charger and at full charge level the charger only required the generator to operate at about half-speed, and when the charger tapered down the charge level to under 30-amps the generator became so quiet I literally forgot about it. It is MUCH quieter than my boat's inboard diesel engine, and more efficient than running the main engine just to top off the batteries. I also used it to power a heavy duty 120v grinder and it had no problems supplying the needed power, even on electric motor start-up.
I got this mainly for charging our boat's batteries at anchor but I also wanted the ability to run power tools. The lighter 1000-watt inverter generators could easily handle the charging application but not the more power-hungry tools. Having the extra power also means the eco-throttle will likely kick in earlier and the unit will operate quieter. The number-1 purchase criteria was "quiet" because I don't want to be distracted by incessant noise or be a bad neighbor in anchorages. The Honeywell was not quiet enough in my opinion.
An appeal to other boaters and to campers: Please don't settle for "cheap". Get a better quality inverter-generator unit that's quieter so you minimize noise pollution in get-away places. (Leave your "contractors generator" at home!!!) Also, please be considerate of neighbors and limit running it to times/places you aren't as likely to disturb others... and don't leave your boat or campsite while it runs and runs. We all like our electric conveniences, but if you really need 120v power more or less constantly; you should stay home or get a dock/parking space where you can plug into "the grid". It's rude to disturb others who are trying to get away to find some peace and quiet. If generators are abused it will lead to regulations banning them.
Negative: The unit ships without engine oil, so you need to buy a quart of standard 4-stroke engine oil and fill it. You will also need a funnel, and a pan to catch excess oil. There is no dipstick; you need to fill to the level of the bottom of the filler hole until any more runs out. It uses less than 3/4 quart. I think they should have included the required amount of oil, and a plastic filler container with a spout, marked to show the proper amount of oil to use.

(More customer reviews)This is a great unit. I bought it in anticipation of power outages in our area, which happen often. I have it wired through a transfer switch to run the gas furnace, gas hot water heater (direct vent), refrigerator, under-cabinet microwave, and some lights (but not all at once). It runs reasonably quiet when idle. I did notice the automatic control tended to blip the throttle with no load, so the engine races slightly. Under load, things settle down. Once there's any significant current draw (like when the refrigerator kicks on), noise levels go up considerably. It still has less than 20 hours on the clock, so its still in the break in period. Both pull and electric start are effortless. It hardly needs the choke even with a cold start.
The engine is quiet enough at idle, although I wouldn't want to hold a conversation right next to it. Once it revs up under load, it can get loud.
I estimate gas consumption to be around 8 hours/tank for my application. That's for a furnace fan cycling approximately 1/3 of the time, energy star fridge (about 300W), water heater (also about 300W), and occasional microwave (1.3 Kw). That works about to about 22+ hours with a full tank and a 5 gal gas can.
Be careful with the oil dipstick, its plastic screwed onto metal and its easy to cross thread. You get two dipsticks, one on each side of the engine, for some reason.
If you're thinking of converting this to propane, the carburetor must be modified. There's not enough room to fit a tri-fuel kit and still fit the air filter into the enclosure. Its only doable if you sacrifice the side panel, or permanently modify the existing carburetor.
Unlike Yamaha or Honda, the parts list and service manual are readily available from the manufacturer. If you've some experience with small engines, it shouldn't take a lot of effort to do most of the servicing yourself.

(More customer reviews)After a 28 hour winter power outage, I decided to get a generator to keep our housing essentials alive... like heat, refrigerator, microwave, etc. I bought this generator because it had a good price and ratings that would handle my needs, plus extra starting power for motors. The listing said it could take 10 days to arrive, but it only took three days. I did some wiring to allow me to connect the generator to our electric dryer outlet. Then I took it outside on a cool day, poured in a little bit of gas, turned off the main house breaker, and plugged it in. It started on the first pull, and then we turned on the furnace and then let everything else in the house just work naturally until it ran out of gas about an hour later. This generator powered it all with no problems. Some people were without power here for 7 days. I highly recommend this unit.

(More customer reviews)I was apprehensive about buying this generator because they don't have a network of service centers... they tell you to take it to any small engine shop near you and contact them about charges under warranty. I called their cust svc and talked with them about the need for third party verification regarding parts needed and they assured me none was required.. I could fix it myself if I wanted.. just call them and tell them what I needed and they'd send it out. That seemed fair enough. It took a little over a week to get mine and it was delivered by USF Holland freight and arrived in pristine condition.. hats off to Holland. I got the liftgate delivery and he backed that big semi right up to my garage door...took his hand truck and set the small skid it was banded to in the center of my garage.. he required no help.. I never touched it until he was gone. These come packed in a cardboard carton and the packaging is well engineered.. thick foam all sides.. top and bottom.. all loose parts.. wheel kit.. etc.. in their own little nook in the foam. It is very heavy but you can get it assembled and off the skid working alone.. I did and I'm 62 yrs old. I pulled the front until it overhung the skid about 10" and assembled the wheel kit then pivoted one side of the rear until it overhung and assembled that strut then blocked the rear strut up with a 4x4 and pulled the skid out of the way and assembled the other strut. I filled it with good synthetic blend oil and put about a gallon of gas in it. I turned the fuel valve on.. it's located a few inches to the right of the choke handle. I pulled the choke handle all the way out and tried to start it with the key... the battery was totally dead. I pulled it out and put it on the charger and stuck the battery outa my lawn tractor in it and tried to start it. It was running almost before I could let go of the key. These Powermax units all have an idle control on them so there's no speed adjustments of any kind possible and none needed. It idles very fast.. all generators do.. they have to to produce current. It ran smooth with no fluctuating noticeable in engine speed. Next I took my voltmeter and checked the output on all the current-carrying poles on all the receptacles. I got a steady 119 volts everywhere. With a target of 120 I considered this to be excellent.. my house current won't hold that. The reason I bought this big unit in the first place was I had hoped it would start and run my big window air conditioner... it is huge.. 30k btu's. I plugged the extension cord I had bought into the L14-30 240v receptacle on the generator and ran it inside the house and plugged up the conversion cord I'd made going to the 6-30 plug on the air conditioner and turned it on. It fired right up with no bogging down and I never noticed the engine on the genny pick up at all. I let it run about a half hour... let the compressor on the air conditioner cycle off and on many times and watched the voltmeter on the genny. It never moved.. engine really never picked up speed either so this generator runs that big air conditioner without any strain on it at all.. I was VERY relieved. The other things I plan to run during an outage won't even approach the surge requirements of that big air conditioner so that issue was put to rest. It turned out that the battery in mine was no good.. wouldn't hold a charge even a half hour. I called MaxTool and told them and true to their word there was no hassle.. they sent me a brand new battery and shipped it FexEx at no charge. I wondered if maybe I had been sent a generator that had been sitting in inventory a year or so but no.. the data tag on it shows a MFG date of May 2007.. I bought it in late August so I got a brand new one.. just had a bad battery. I tried the pull start several times and it always starts on one pull. I go out about once every two weeks and start it and let it run awhile to get oil thru it good.. keep a maintenance trickle charger on it all the time. I can't speak to what it will do over time but outa the box it's everything it was promised to be.. I love it so far. I almost bought a Coleman but those units got horrible reviews.. rampant with quality issues.. leaking gas all over.. horrible vibration issues.. etc.. also they have no idle control and most no electric start and are overpriced terribly. I'm glad I bought this Powermax... couldn't be happier at this point.. good luck to you.

(More customer reviews)When I unpacked it, I just put oil and fuel in the engine, followed the simple directions and it started right up. I quickly opened the choke and it "hunted" for a minute before settling down as it warmed up; that wouldn't have happened if I'd gradually opened the choke as it warmed up. No problem, I could've plugged in an electrical load right away and it would've settled down. I found it will continuously power a 1500W heater without complaint, though obviously that's not recommended. It's got plenty of reserve, though, at its rated 1000W capacity. The whole thing's made in China, including the engine that looks to me like a copy of an OHV Tecumseh. With it running outside under load I can hear it all through the house, sounding about like a push mower. It would be a bit loud for running at night in a quiet campground. My intended use for it is for an emergency heat source for a pet in case of a winter power outage, so noise isn't an issue for me. I think this is a dandy little generator for light duty, at a very good price.
