Actron CP9185 Elite AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)The CP9185 works exactly as expected with one exception. It does accurately provide the diagnostic codes for trouble-shooting and will clear (turn-off) the "Repair Soon" light if you wish. It seems to have an extensive built-in database that allows it to recognize most vehicles - both domestic and imported. The operation of the unit is straight-forward and simple. However, the internal database on the unit I received contains data only through model year 2002. Vehicles manufactured after that date would have required an update to the built-in database. Updating over the internet is one of the features that attracted me to this unit. The problem occurred when I tried to install the PC drivers that would allow the unit to communicate with my computer - something that is necessary to perform an on-line update. The drivers provided with the unit simply would not work - i.e., the PC would not recognize the drivers on the supplied CD as valid drivers for my CP9185. I am very familiar with computers and installing drivers for a unit like this is straight forward. I contacted technical support (in fact I spoke with them about 4 times) to try to work through the problem. Technical support personnel were friendly and responsive - I have only the highest praise for them - but they were unable to solve the problem. They finally told me that it appeared the CP9185 itself was defective in that it was probably identifying itself incorrectly to the PC - even though the unit appeared to work fine in every other respect. I have shipped the unit back for repair (my expense) and am told it will take 4-6 weeks for repairs to be completed. If it had not been for this problem, I would have rated the CP9185 as a full 5 stars. If and when the unit is returned to me in working order, I will update this review.
UPDATE - The unit did come back from the repair shop after about 2 months with a note stating that the unit had checked out as working correctly and there was nothing for them to fix. The repair shop note did not elaborate and there is no indication that they had ever tried to connect it to a PC despite that fact that I had included a very specific description of my problem. As far as I know, they simply checked the unit for stand-alone functioning. Of course, there is never any way to talk directly to the technician that did the work. Needless to say this is not the result I had hoped for. I have effectively given up and decided that I will have to live with a tester that cannot be updated. Clearly, this quite severely limits its usefulness in future years.

Auterra A-501 DashDyno SPD ProPack In-Vehicle Automotive Computer - Scan Tool, Performance Meter, and Data Logger Review

(More customer reviews)I've used this on a bunch of cars and it has worked great on every one. I've tried it on a 2006 Subaru WRX, 2004 Mazda RX-8, 2004 BMW 325i, 2004 Infiniti G35, and a 2007 Lotus Elise. It does what it says in terms of being able to monitor all the parameters and has flexible display options. The only issue I have had is the update rate on the Infiniti was slow, but that's Nissan's fault, not Auterra's.
I've also used the Dyno part of it on all the above cars and am really impressed with how close it comes to the stock HP and torque charts for the cars. Getting all the data for the car is a bit time consuming (you need to find the weight, drag, gear ratios, etc), but once you have that, it does work. If nothing else, the 0-60 timer is really fun when you find a blank stretch of road.
The included mount with the 501 kit is a nice, flexible RAM brand mount.
The only thing that keeps this from being 5 stars for me is the user interface. It asks WAY too many questions when all you want to look at is a single value like Engine RPM. I wish they figured out a way to make it simpler while also maintaining all the great features.

But now that it is here I find that it is a great OBDII Code Reader and a cool automotive performance meter as well. It's like two products in one! As an OBDII Code Reader, it satisfies all my needs. Like the high end code scanners, it can access data stored in your car's memory as well as Live data. The DashDyno provides access to all engine sensors and displays them as a graphical Gauge, Bar Graph, Line Graph, etc., etc. It can even display Turbo Boost as a Gauge - that's cool.
Auterra's DashDyno also provides automotive performance assessment similar to the G-Tech Pro. The unit can measure and display 0 - 60 and 1/4 Mile Acceleration times as well as Power and Torque. The Power and Torque graphs that can be displayed on the screen are exactly like what you see in all the Car Magazines! About the only thing it can't do is display cornering G's.
In addition, the DashDyno provides a Trip Computer that can monitor Instantaneous as well as Average Fuel Economy - a function that my car does not normally provide. Very Cool."

Bluetooth ELM 327 Scanner OBDII PC Car Diagnostic Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product knowing that it might not be the best Bluetooth OBDII interface on the market. I use it to interface with Torque on a Motorola Droid.
The product is housed in hard plastic and seems very well put together. It does not seem prone to breakage and easily survives drops of five feet to solid pavement with minimal cosmetic damage.
As for connectivity I have not experienced any interruption while driving with the phone fixed to the center console (approx. distance from phone to device no more than one meter).
I have not attempted to use the software that came with the device. In fact, I'm fairly sure that I've thrown it away. Torque is well worth the extra few dollars and having logs on hand in the phone that I use day to day is useful.
I've used this product to read codes for several family members although this service is provided for free by many automotive supply outlets. Combined with an iphone or android based phone and good software it provides data readouts which in my opinion makes it well worth the price. It's also nice to know that with the same software one can increase gas mileage by improving driving efficiency.
Overall I rated this product as five stars because it is inexpensive when compared to other devices and serves it's function admirably.

Not only does it have all of the funtions of the moderately to expensive hand held scanners found in most auto parts stores, it also allows for live date collection at a fraction of the price. Having a laptop or equivelant is neccessary when using the SX SCAN Tool, allowing for data collection and storage. I was able to view live parameters and see real time changes other scanners can't see.

Then I tried to follow the manufacturer's troubleshooting/warranty process and found there was nobody to call via telephone in the North American continent, and their web support only gives you the opportunity to fill out an Excel worksheet with requested information. I submitted the completed failure information and never received any response from this company. Since Amazon appears to only allow the return of unopened items within 30 days and the manufacturer does not respond, I am now stuck with this $100 item that has become useless in less than two months. it is unusuable because there is no information on what the data means!
i would have thought after seeing a cd and usb cable that this thing
would have been accessible via a pc!that would have made the black box feature
so much more valuable.in the end a poor attempt at a SCANGAUGE.
if it came with software to access the data available and info was
available on what all captured data means. then maybe, but as of now

I ordered the 3130 yesterday and recieved it today. Let me tell you, this is a fantastic tool, especially considering the price. The back light feature is great for my old eyes. The "live data" display and record is wonderful for trouble shooting.
The included software is more than adequate. Remember, you are buying hardware. This is not meant to run your garage on. I say you can't go wrong with this gear.

(More customer reviews)If you just want to fool around with your iPod Touch or iPhone as a dash-mounted instrument, or if you want to understand your vehicle performance, or if you want to learn about OBD2 or if you want to develop more cool apps for this device. It is great fun tool to have in you gadget kit bag.
Rev, Dash Command and FuzzyCar are very cool companion apps to get from AppStore.
The device uses the ELM327 chipset and simply opens it up as a TCP port, so you can use any of the various PC apps that support the ELM327 chip as well - e.g. rom Palmerperformance.
I've tried it on various vehicles and it hasn't failed. It does get a bit hot when it is active. It has a 802.11 peer-to-peer Wifi radio inside.
You may find that the OBD2 connector is a bit in the way as it is on my Honda Ridgeline. You need make sure that you run the cable where it won't tangle or interfere with you feet, accell and break pedals. Make sure you cable tie it down neatly.

(More customer reviews)I really like this for my vehicle that doesn't have an MPG indicator. But, it has a short range. It's stopped sending several times and had to reset it and move it closer to the main sending unit. Range isn't much more than about 24 inches. Doesn't have a light, so can't read at night. Would be nice if the MPG indicator was the larger of the indicators. Would like to also have a mileage left indicator. I have the EconoDriver attached to my dash with velcro and I've had to move it down lower on the dash several time after it quite receiving information from the main unit. Other than that it has worked as advertised.

Garmin ecoRoute HD Vehicle Diagnostics Communicator Review

(More customer reviews)After several months of delay, I finally received the ecoroute HD module, and am happy to report that it lives up to all the hype.
Firstly, you'll need to update your nuvi software, I'm using the 1490t which has the larger 5 inch screen. Once that's complete, simply plug the ecoroute into the ODB port (self-powered) and turn on the GPS. From there, I went to the ecoroute menu, and selected the "HD connect" option.
It took several minutes to sync up, and I had to repeat this step when I changed over to a different vehicle. It appears that the ecoroute HD recognizes and stores the vehicle specific data it obtains in its own internal memory.
Once connected (blue light) the first thing I noticed while driving was that the the "green leaf" score was suddenly a lot more accurate, going to 99 anytime I was coasting, even at low speeds, and going down in proportion with my degree acceleration. It seems Garmin was just winging it before without the actual diagnostics, now you are getting actual mileage efficiency results. Excellent for hypermilers like myself.
Another critical aspect, realtime MPG is now one of the selectable options on the main map display. In addition, the other screens such as the ecoroute graph and trip computer are now loaded with diagnostic information such as temperature, battery charge, rpm, etc. Finally, there is a "Gauges" option on the ecoroute menu that allows you to monitor temperature, throttle position, and a host of other diagnostic datum.
All of this is being relayed to the GPS thru bluetooth, however, you can still link to your cell phone for hands free operation, contact lists, etc. No conflicts there.
I also tested the test engine error code functionality on my truck which consistently has a faulty temperature sensor tripping the check engine light. I was able to successfully display the error code with a short description, and turn off the check engine light. Bottom line, this device WILL save you on unneeded trips to the mechanic.
All in all, the ecoroute HD delivers on all fronts. I'll probably be buying a second nuvi 1490t and ecoroute module for the truck, as this rivals anything you could possibly purchase in a vehicle accessory package, while costing a mere fraction of what you would pay for similar functionality, which to be honest, I don't believe exists in such a comprehensive package anywhere else.
As mentioned before, this is great for hypermilers, and budding home mechanics alike.

(More customer reviews)SUMMARY: Great concept and much-needed product. Unfortunately, my unit failed after 10 days. Replacement/refund process a three-month ordeal.
THE GOOD: This product represents a much-needed tool for drivers to educate themselves in fuel-efficient driving techniques. It works. After ordering, I received the unit in a timely manner and found it easy to install. The user interface was somewhat clumsy, but I was able to get my Kiwi MPG up and running in a few minutes by reading the instructions. Once installed, I found the Kiwi MPG very useful for determining instantaneous and average fuel efficiency of my 2004 Toyota Tacoma.
THE BAD: Unfortunately, the unit failed within the first 10 days of use. Symptoms were that it would not shut down after the vehicle was shut off. Rather it continued to operate and got very hot. Shortly after this symptom commenced, it failed altogether and just gave an error display. It was still functional if I shut it off manually and rebooted every time I started the truck, but clearly it was not working out. Unfortunately, since this was purchased through a second party seller, I had to deal with the seller rather than Amazon directly.
THE UGLY: After contacting the seller by email, I was instructed to send the unit back for a replacement, which I did. One week passed, then two...and ultimately five weeks and still no replacement. I contacted the seller via email again and was assured my replacement was on the way. More time passed and still no replacement. After this, I was able to locate a phone number on the web and after several tries over a number of days eventually contacted the company. I verified that they had received my return and again, I was assured a replacement was on the way. Again, weeks passed and no replacement. Subsequently, I left a message with a different person on the phone and eventually my call was returned by someone high up in the company who was at a trade show at the time. He instructed me to call the original person I had spoken to weeks earlier and tell this person that he should "take care of me". I did and the person agreed to process a refund. More weeks passed, no refund. I called this person again and he told me he'd have to check with their accounting department and get back to me. He promised an email within a few hours explaining the status of my refund... no email appeared.
At this point, it was crystal clear that PLX had no intention of refunding my money. I contacted Amazon directly and inquired about my options. My first inquiry was met with (direct quote)
"Unfortunately as they are not responding to your calls and emails there is nothing we can do."
I was not satisfied with this answer from Amazon and sent a more impassioned follow-up which included more details about my quest for a replacement or refund. My second claim was just approved and today Amazon sent an email confirming that I will be getting a refund for the purchase price from them directly. The squeaky wheel gets the oil I guess. Thus, assuming Amazon follows through, my long and painful saga appears to be over. My original purchase was on July 19th, 2009. The date of confirmation of a refund by Amazon is November 22nd. This was my second experience recently with uncooperative second party sellers through Amazon. I'd like to acknowledge here that Amazon did make it right in both cases. They deserve kudos for this.
Judging from the other reviews on this page, a lot of people have had good experiences with the Kiwi MPG. I suspect most people will have a similarly good experience. However, one should go into this purchase with their eyes open. If you do need to send the unit back for whatever reason, you are in for a painful ride.

I had a problem with a 2001 Hyundai, and this book covered to a certain extent. But it is pretty high tech and I'm a backyard mechanic. I was trying to find the reason for an engine light coming on or the codes. I think this is a helpful book for those who are more into the actual business of auto repair. Good but not so easy to understand.

Hickok 76462 Universal Electronic Fuel Injector Quick Probe Review

(More customer reviews)Not as sensitive as I would like it to be, but it does have its place over a stethoscope for listening to the injector pulse. Sometimes noise travels on fuel rail, with a stethoscope it is hard sometimes for me to tell if it is the injector is working or the sound travel from other injectors. This tool senses the injector which you make contact with and not the fuel rail.
The trigger wheel is a new feature, but it is sensitive around above 6. You must turn the wheel off to turn the unit off completely. Overall I am pleased to use it to find good and bad injector quick!
